What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is one of the most powerful, evidence-based therapies available for treating trauma and PTSD. In just a handful of sessions, many people experience meaningful relief and begin moving forward with confidence.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a structured therapy designed to help the brain process and heal from distressing experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, to help reprocess traumatic memories that feel stuck.
EMDR is recognized by leading organizations, including the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, as a first-line treatment for trauma and PTSD. It delivers real results, often faster than many people expect.
Conditions That Respond Well to EMDR
PTSD & Complex Trauma
EMDR is one of the most studied and effective treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder — whether from a single acute event or years of repeated traumatic experiences. It reduces intrusive symptoms, nightmares, flashbacks, and hyperarousal.
Anxiety & Panic Disorders
Anxiety often has roots in past experiences that were never fully processed. EMDR identifies and reprocesses the memory networks underlying anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks, providing lasting relief rather than just symptom management.
Depression
Many depressive episodes are linked to unresolved experiences of loss, shame, or failure. EMDR therapy targets the underlying painful memories that fuel negative beliefs and hopelessness, helping clients break free from persistent depressive cycles.
Grief & Loss
Complicated grief, especially when tied to traumatic loss, can leave you feeling stuck and unable to move forward. EMDR helps gently process the distress surrounding the loss, allowing for healthy mourning and a renewed connection to life.
Shame & Negative Self-Beliefs
Deep-rooted beliefs like "I am not good enough," "I am broken," or "I am unlovable" often originate in early hurtful experiences. EMDR reprocesses the memories that created these beliefs, replacing them with more adaptive, empowering perspectives.
Phobias & Performance Anxiety
Whether it's a fear of flying, public speaking, social situations, or medical procedures, EMDR rapidly desensitizes the fearful response by reprocessing the experiences that gave rise to the phobia — without requiring prolonged exposure.

How EMDR Works
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase protocol designed to ensure safety, effectiveness, and lasting results. Each phase builds naturally on the last.
History and Preparation
We begin by understanding your history, identifying target memories, and building calming and stabilization skills so you feel grounded and prepared. Safety and readiness come first, and we always move at a pace that feels right for you. We never rush into processing.
Bilateral Stimulation and Reprocessing
While you briefly focus on a distressing memory, your therapist guides your eyes in a rhythmic back-and-forth movement, or uses taps or tones. This bilateral stimulation supports the brain’s natural processing system, allowing the memory to be reprocessed and stored in a healthier, more adaptive way.
Desensitization and Installation
The emotional intensity connected to the memory begins to fade. In its place, a more positive and empowering belief about yourself is strengthened and reinforced, such as shifting from "I am powerless" to "I am in control of my life."
Body Scan and Closure
At the end of each session, we check in with your body and ensure you leave feeling grounded and stable. Between sessions, many clients notice continued progress as the brain naturally keeps processing.
